SCATP Part II: Strategies Strategy 4

Strategy 4:  During Reading (Student VOC Strategy)

What is the Student VOC Strategy?
Students take words from context and analyze them using this strategy.  Students are able to assess their own learning style and make meaningful connections with the content.  Students write their definitions and then make a sensory connection to the word.

Why does this strategy work?
This strategy accounts for student motivation and connection by allowing for sensory connections.  When students use multiple faculties to learn words they are able to better retain the information they learned the word in, the word itself and its' meaning.

How does this strategy work?
1.  Students read an assigned passage.
2.  Vocabulary terms key to the unit are previewed with students and written on the board or on some other visual graphic.
3.  Students are asked to point out any unfamiliar vocabulary terms during this preview using the
VOC Strategy.

What does this strategy look like?
1.  Student copies the exact sentence that the word is in.
2.  Student writes a prediction about what that word means.
3.  Students find an "expert" to help them define the word.
4.  Student writes a sentence that clearly proves they know the definition of the word.
5.  Students either draw a picture, perform a miming action, or connect the word with something familiar to them in order to remember the word.
